I typically feel great about volunteering with local organizations that help out those less blessed.
One of the sites that I help out is a local food pantry.
In numerous cases these types of facilities rely on churches & town halls for their space as funds are limited & they need discounted rent; I understand this because they rely on donations of food & money to keep them up & running. The pantry where I volunteer actually needs to reconsider the space that they use. It is hard to access by those who have any sort of physical limitations due to the staircases & worst of all my pal and I have to service people out of a small room that has no ventilation, but the room is no greater than a walk-in closet, has no windows & only one means of escape should the need arise. I don’t even know that it is up to code as far as safety is sad. It is located in the basement of a church & I suppose they feel that it is what they could afford so they just make do, however during the Summer months it can get so stuffy in there that the two hours seem to drag by. My great friend and I brought in a small fan to help circulate the air but it just isn’t enough. I wish there was a way to install some sort of ventilation system that could draw out the stale air & replace it with new… Perhaps they should speak with the church council & see if there is another room that is affixed to the Heating plus A/C system that my pal and I could use. It would entirely help the people coming to get food & the volunteers feel better.
