I have to admit, since I started working at my current job I’ve wondered how one of my co-workers had such an extravagant lifestyle.
He is always talking about going on these wild inexpensive trips with all of his buddies.
He has an extremely pricey car and shows it off regularly. And he’s always trying to pay for everybody to go out on the town for big events. It’s been a mystery to me, because I know that we don’t get paid all that well. I’ve been pretty curious how he was managing to have all of these resources making the same salary I was. Well I found out accidentally a few weeks ago. I went into the office late at night because I had forgotten some important paperwork on my desk. When I open the door, I flipped on the lights and was shocked to find my co-workers sleeping on the floor on a pile of sleeping bags. He had the air conditioning cranked up to level 11 in the office and had brought in a nice box fan to add some extra ventilation to his face. He sat up abruptly, and started muttering something about needing to crash there for the night. The next week, I found out that in fact, he stayed in the office most nights. He used our company air conditioning system throughout the summer to stay cool. Rather than paying for his own air conditioning system at home or ponying up the money for high energy bills, he was saving a buck using our office AC. I guess his lifestyle wasn’t luxurious enough to afford HVAC.
