While vacationing in the southwest we came across a really cool hotel.
We always try to find accommodations that are off the beaten path or a bit different than the large hotel chains.
We found an older hotel that was located along the desert mountain range and part of it was actually built into the side of the mountain. The rooms in that area did not have any windows and you could actually see the rock face wall on one side of the room. I found it odd to see that there was an air vent with a great over it located on that wall. My first thought was why they would have that there when there was no window to let any fresh air in but apparently in between the glass and the wall there was a constant breeze from the caves themselves. The pressure came from natural air tubes that were located throughout the space and it actually felt like having natural air conditioning piped into the room. We asked the clerk what they did during the winter but they indicated that the air temperature was the same no matter what time of year and it really worked well to accommodate their guests. They do say that in the event of really cold temperatures, which don’t happen often in that area, they utilized space heaters to keep the rooms a bit warmer. Most of the gas that stayed with them we’re looking for a more natural experience rather than a basic hotel room that had heat and air conditioning anyway so they appreciated the difference. This place would never rank as a five-star hotel but it really added to our vacation experience and we will never forget that unique place.
